Images in pdfs don't print

I am using an old DC252 and command workstation 5 and when I attempt to print a job from illustrator pdf any images don't print. I have to rip it into photoshop at high res, then save as a pdf and print from that.
I have tried saving my pdfs in all the formats from 'high quality' to 'print quality' etc. and still images just disappear. The graphics are there but not the images.
Any ideas would be a great help - thanks

When saving out your Illustrator PDF's, deselect "use compression" and make sure any placed graphics are not using "LZW" compression
