    Default Toshiba Fiery Drivers - Intermittent slow performance.

    Have a client that uses a combination of Windows and Mac computers. Windows users have no performance problems when sending to the Fiery controller on the Toshiba eStudio 4540c. Toshiba is hard wired to the network and many of the users both Windows and Mac are wireless.
    • Using the latest Toshiba Fiery drivers for the Mac and latest OSX updates (10.8.x) produces mixed results with Power Point and Adobe documents.
    • The speed to print one page can take a few seconds to a couple of minutes for that same page
    • Connecting a MacBook Pro with a cross-over cable directly to the fiery controller produces the same problem.
    • Replaced the fiery controller with a spare at the client site, same problem.
    • Customers Fiery controller installed on another Toshiba in our showroom has no problem with performance.
    • Removing the fiery from the mix and printing directly to the Toshiba internal NIC produces no issues.
    • Spooling to the fiery was painfully slow when the problem occurs, you can watch the percentage slowly tick up to 100%. Other times it is almost instant.
    Question: Anybody experienced problems with Macs printing to a fiery controller with intermittent slow performance?

    Hello,

    What type of port are you using on the Mac's? Is it LPR, Bonjour or Port 9100? Does the port type make any difference in your testing?

    For speed I've always preferred LPR.

    Yes Bruce, choose the IP tab and used LPR. Honestly did not try another option because we always use this method in other installations without a problem. Thank you for your response.

    Default Sounds like a network problem

    Aln,

    Sounds like you've been pretty thorough troubleshooting the problem, and that it only occurs at the client site.

    When the problem occurs, have a look on the network to see what's going on. Open activity monitor on the mac, check the network tab, see if it's peaking out. Check the hub/router nearby - see if a packet storm could be occurring. See if both wired and wireless clients are seeing the issue.

    It's either that mac, or something on the network that's causing the slowdown.

    Your post says "Connecting a MacBook Pro with a cross-over cable directly to the fiery controller produces the same problem" so I'd be looking at that mac rather closely, checking CPU, RAM and Network stats in activity monitor when the problem occurs. Click to sort by CPU, Memory and Messages Sent to isolate the offending app or daemon.

    Default Possibly resolved

    Thanks to all for responding. Here is what may have solved the issue.

    The client had DNS entries but was not using DNS, going directly to IP instead. We removed the DNS entries. The Fiery Controller was configured for 10/100 not AUTO, we changed that setting to hopefully take advantage of the maximum speed of their network

    Since I'm not as familiar with the intricate nature of MAC OS networking it's unclear as to why it would be slower than a Windows based system even with the above changes? There were never any complaints about the Windows based computers sending jobs.

    I appreciate the support from the Fiery group here at EFI.
