Halftone Screening is a term used to describe the method by which ink 'dots' coprising of C,M,Y, K are placed on a page to allow patterns and subsequently images to appear. It is a traditional (offset) approach to printing.

When a digital printer is used to proof for offset, it is useful to be able to simulate the screening of the job. Many operators want to print in halftone mode, even on a contone engine. To guarantee optimal quality, operators also want to have more control of halftone generation on the contone engine and the offset press.

The Halftone Simulation feature allows users to print in halftone mode, and to define custom screening functions that will be applied to their print jobs. These print jobs are usually defined as halftones in the server setup or applications such as Quark or PhotoShop.
