I'm an analyst for Fuji Xerox in Australia and I have several customers who would like to see the color mode feature implemented on a page by page basis similar to that currently used in the mixed media setup.

These customer often recieve files from their client (usually in pdf format) and would like an easy way to choose which pages print colour and which don't without having to change the original file.

I realise this isn't possible currently but was wondering whether it could be considered for implementation in future releases.

Hi Paul,

Can't you use Black Detection? This will then tell you how many pages are black and how many are colour.

This will be shown on the job log after you've printed.

Is this what you are looking for?

I'm referring to pages which either contain coloured content or content which for which Black detection doesn't work without altering the original file. Unfortunately many end customer supply colour files to print bureaus to be printed predominantly grayscale.

this is a somewhat common call to the Xerox hotline.

customers get poorly designed files and would like to be able to specify which pages they consider B&W and don't want the fiery or printer choose for them.

If you have access to pitstop then you can run a "convert to grey" on any pages that you want to become black and you'll get the correct clicks as a result.

it would be nice to be able to define a page as greyscale on a Fiery. This is possibly something for EFI to consider as a competing rip sever allows you to manage color on a page level and thus you could define a page alone to be greyscale.

On some Fierys you can do this from within Mixed media or Impose.

In Mixed Media, when you're defining a page range, you'll see a pull-down menu for "Print Mode" where you can choose "Document Setting," "CMYK," or "Grayscale."

In Impose, you can click on the "Default Media" link under each sheet to display the same dialog box and selections.

I'll have to check that out... thanks for the tip.

That option must be Fiery-dependent as it is certainly not a feature available in my version of Impose (3.0.0.41). An alternative, similar to that mentioned above, is to convert the file in Acrobat Pro, providing there are not too many pages in a doc that require converting.

For those Fiery customers that do not have the latest version of the Fiery, but do have access to paper catalog and Fiery Color Profile Suite, there is a workaround where in you assign a CMYK profile to those pages you want printed in color and a Grayscale profile to those pages you want printed in K.

For a detailed explanation see the post on the Fiery Color & Imaging Forum:

After the job is printed is too late -it would sure be nice to be able to run a test and know ahead of time if they are going to convert - its probably aready known once rasterized so why not abiltiy to see qty of greyscale andcmyk there?
